Now playing:
NotWorldMusic showcases one exceptional album from every country around the globe.
Why the name?
World music as a marketing term for non-Western music was established by the industry in the 80s. In this discriminatory definition it stands for exoticism and Eurocentric thinking. As David Byrne put it: "It's a none too subtle way of reasserting the hegemony of Western pop culture. It ghettoizes most of the world's music. A bold and audacious move, White Man!"
How do I listen to the albums?
Streaming through the Spotify API was developed, but Spotify did not permit publishing the app with this feature. For now you will have to manually search for the albums.
How were the albums selected?
Each album represents the best rated album of artists from that country according to the community at rateyourmusic.com.
